Would you like to read books to your children in Chinese? Are you learning to read simplified Chinese? The Iowa City Public Library has what you need. Recently the library received a donation of new Chinese books to our children’s collection. The Iowa Chinese Reading Club generously donated the 171 books in February. Most of the books are now available to check out from the children’s room.

Look for the call number j495.1 in the jNonfiction section. All of our materials in Chinese for children are shelved here, including movies and music.

Maybe you’ll find a translated copy of one of my favorite stories Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. Follow Gerald the giraffe as he overcomes the ridicule of the other animals and finds his own beat.

The last few books are awaiting catalog translation help, but should be available soon. A big thank you to our friends from the Iowa Chinese Reading Club!

Iowa City is much like Madison, Wi. in being into embracing other cultures, but not always embracing their own cities, states and area’s ethnic roots.

German, Scandinavian, and other European cultures are worth embracing and remembering as well.

Kind of stuck in the ’60’s politically correct, which actually is just set of different set of prejudice.

Thanks for reading Jim. While I chose to highlight the Chinese collection because of the recent donation, we do also have a selection of other languages, including German, French, and Italian. If you are interested in cultural history, you might be interested in our folklore section which features traditional tales from countries all around the world. You’ll be most interested in j398.2094 which includes Germany, Norway, and Sweden. You might also enjoy looking through our Digital History Project which collects photos and videos highlighting historic Iowa City and Johnson County. The Iowa City Public Library strives to provide a welcoming environment to our entire community, which includes those who are new to our area, as well as those with deep roots here.
