Celebrate Pianos at ICPL

by on November 4th, 2015

It’s time to tickle the ivories and celebrate one of music’s most popular instruments: the piano. Join the Iowa City Public Library for Piano Week Nov. 8 through Nov. 14, a special addition to our Music is the Word series.

The celebration begins with the screening of Note by Note: The Making of Steinway L1037 at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, in Meeting Room A. This 2007 documentary follows the creation of a Steinway concert grand, #L1037, from forest floor to concert hall, in a process spanning 12 months, 12,000 parts, 450 craftsmen and countless hours of labor.

We will screen a second documentary, Pianomania, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12, in Meeting Room A. This 2009 German-Austrian documentary follows Stefan Knüpfer, a piano tuner from Steinway and his famous clients Lang Lang, Brendel, Buchbinder and Pierre-Laurent Aimard as they search for the perfect pitch.

Finally, join us at 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 13, in Meeting Room A for a Piano Jazz Concert featuring pianist Dick Watson, jazz singer Eve Minkler, and bassist Gary Palmer.

Music is the Word is ICPL’s nine-month celebration of all things musical to welcome the University of Iowa School of Music building to downtown Iowa City. The Voxman Music Building is scheduled to open in fall of 2016.

Up above in paragraph two, you say the Steinway Piano screening is on Tuesday Nov. 10, but on the right in the black box you say it is on Tuesday Nov 11. Surely one is wrong.

An older graphic was pulled by mistake. The Steinway Piano screening is tonight (Tuesday, Nov. 10). Thanks for the heads up!
