Iowa City Community School District Candidate Special Election Forums and election information

J.P. Claussen, Paul Roesler and Janice Weiner are in the race to fill the seat of Tom Yates, who resigned in May. There will be a July 19 special election to fill his vacant seat.

Claussen is a former West High special education teacher, Roesler is an outreach leader at Scheels and Weiner is a former U.S. diplomat of 26 years.

Early voting began Tuesday at the auditor’s office, and residents can cast their votes on weekdays from 7:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Mission Iowa City: Monday from 7-9 p.m. at Meeting Room A in the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. The event will focus on questions organizers are gathering from students, parents, educators and other community members. Those interested in posing questions can send them to

Special Education forum: Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Handicare Inc., 2240 9th St., Coralville. The event will focus on candidates’ stances on special education services in the Iowa City Community School District.

Press-Citizen forum: July 13 from 7-8:15 p.m. at Schwab Auditorium in the Coralville Public Library, 1401 5th St. The event will include questions posed by the Press-Citizen as well as community members. Those interested can submit questions for consideration to

Education Exchange: On July 15 at 4 p.m., Public Access Television will record an extra episode of Education Exchange highlighting the differences between the candidates. PATV will livestream the event on its website, and the episode will air at 12:30 p.m. the following Saturday, 10:30 a.m. Sunday, 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Monday and at 8 a.m., noon and 5 p.m. Tuesday. Education Exchange is a talk show that provides updates on the school district.
