Storytime Recap: Labor Day Cover Image

Today’s family storytime was in honor of Labor Day. We read books about all kinds of jobs and worker’s rights. We sang songs about marching and celebrating together. I told everyone about how workers came together and demonstrated for better pay and working conditions. We talked about how even children used to have hard jobs to do. I asked the children what kind of jobs they have now and what they might want to be when they grow up. We also talked about how a lot of people get Labor Day off of work or school to relax and have a good time.

A Marching We Will Go

   A marching we will go
   A marching we will go
   Hi ho the derry-o
   A marching we will go
(hopping, jumping, walking, tiptoeing)

Here We Go Looby Loo

Here we go looby loo
Here we go looby light
Here we go looby loo
All on a Saturday night
You put your right hand in
You take your right hand out
You give your hand a shake, shake, shake
And turn yourself about
(Left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot, whole self)

Little Boy Blue

Little Boy Blue,
Come blow your horn,
The sheep’s in the meadow,
The cow’s in the corn;
But where is the boy
Who looks after the sheep?
He’s under a haystack,
He’s fast asleep.
Will you wake him?
No, not I,
For if I do,
He’s sure to cry.

We finished by watching the animated picture book Brave Girl by Michelle Markel about a young girl and her part in the labor movement of the 1890s.
