Winter crafting inspired by the Bookmobile

by Shawna Riggins on December 14th, 2017

When the weather starts to cool, I brush off my crafting supplies and I know it’s time to get started on hand made gifts. I love to make crafts but some years I am stumped about what to make when it comes time to get started. This year, my crafting choice was made easy when the Feminist Icon Cross Stitch book caught my eye during some down time on the Bookmobile. I made two of the patterns for women in my life and I hope to make one for myself next! A new cross stitch book, Really Cross Stitch just arrived on the Bookmobile yesterday, so now I have even more patterns I am itching to make.

We like to boast that the Bookmobile is filled with the newest and most popular items. To keep that distinction, we are continually adding new books to the collections on the Bookmobile. Recently our Non Fiction section has been expanding with several new crafting books and cook books. The hardest part of my days on the Bookmobile has to be seeing so many great books and knowing that I don’t have time to read them all.

D2016 07 Decoupageecoupage is back in style! Recently I discovered a couple books in the Library’s collection about decoupage using Mod Podge, and it brought back a flood of happy childhood memories.

My friends and I used to make decoupage gifts for one-another. One of my favorites is displayed in my office – a cartoon from Western Horseman my friend decoupaged onto a board showing a girl riding a horse. The caption is “If you can read this bumper sticker … you might be kicked.” (It still makes me giggle.)

I also remember working with my Mom to make decoupage gifts for the holidays – one year we decoupaged our school pictures onto small boards as a gift for our grandparents. Read the rest of this entry »

ICPL Arts and Craft Bazaar Dec. 5

by Meredith Hines-Dochterman on November 27th, 2015

Just in time for the holidays, the Iowa City Public Library will host the Fourth Annual Arts & Crafts Bazaar and Winter Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5.

The craft bazaar will be held in meeting rooms A, B and C at the Library, 123 S. Linn St. The used book sale will take place in the hallway outside Meeting Room A.

Thanks to the generous donations of local artists and crafters, shoppers will find a wide selection of unique gifts from quilts and knitted items to jewelry, holiday ornaments, and more. For every $10 spent at the bazaar, shoppers receive an entry for amazing door prizes. Winners do not need to be present to win.

A children’s craft will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon in Meeting Room D.

Proceeds from the Arts & Crafts Bazaar benefit the Iowa City Public Library Friends Foundation, which supports the Summer Reading Program and other Library programs and collections.

Both Library events coincide with the Eastside Artists Annual Show at the Masonic Building, 312 College St., and Iowa City Downtown District Holiday Open House. Make a day of your trip downtown and get a head start on your holiday shopping.
