Holds @ ICPL

by Kara Logsden on March 2nd, 2016

2015 12 don't forgetWhat did Iowa City Public Library patrons do 146,917 times in Fiscal Year 2015? They placed a HOLD on a Library material. You may place a hold by logging into your account online or Library staff are happy to help you place a hold.

Holds, also known as “Reserves” are a convenient way to access Library materials. At the Library there are two different kinds of holds: Holds on materials checked out to other patrons and Holds on materials checked in and available (we’ll pull the items from the shelf for you!). You may have 10 free holds on your Library Account at any given time and, as a convenience, items stay on the Holds Shelf for 6 days to give you time to come in and pick them up.
Unfortunately, some holds are not picked up. We understand … sometimes plans change, sometimes you forget, or sometimes you are out of town. We have a new service to help you better manage your holds: FREEZE a HOLD.

2016 01 Freeze a HoldFREEZE a HOLD – what does that mean? If you requested an item, but want to delay when it is ready to be picked up, you can log in to your account and freeze the hold on that item. For example, if you are going on vacation and don’t want to miss getting your requested items, you can freeze the holds before you leave and then unfreeze them when you return. You will do this by logging into your account and indicating which holds you wish to freeze or unfreeze. There are some times when a hold may not be frozen – if you received a notice the hold was available for pick-up it is too late to freeze it at that point.

If you have questions about this new service, please stop by or give us a call.

New eMail Reminders from ICPL

by Kara Logsden on November 30th, 2015

At the Iowa City Public Library we’re always looking for ways to improve services for our patrons. Beginning soon, we will begin eMailing “Enhanced Notices” to help our patrons with their Library Card accounts. The eMails will come from the eMail address “libraryaccountnotice@icpl.org”

Notices include:

*It’s Time to Renew your ICPL Library Card: Library Cards routinely expire, if you wonder why please check out this BLOG post. We will send a courtesy reminder to everyone in our service area (Iowa City, rural Johnson County, University Heights, Hills and Lone Tree) when their Library Card is about to expire.

*Don’t Lose That Hold: A reminder a hold will be pulled from the Holds Shelf in two days.

*You are Approaching the Fine Limit: A reminder that fines are approaching $10. Most card privileges are suspended when fines exceed $10.

*The Coolest Card in Town: A reminder for patrons who applied online for a Library Card but didn’t stop by the Library to pick-up their card.

Here’s a sample of what the eMail looks like for Library Accounts that will expire:

Remote Book Returns @ Your Library

by Kara Logsden on March 3rd, 2015

Can’t make it Downtown to return your Library materials? Never fear – remote book returns are here!2015 03 Book Return

Many community members utilize the Library’s two remote book returns – our recent quarterly count of materials returned shows 14% of all items returned to the Library February 23rd through March 1st came through the remote book returns. This compares to 15.6% in our count last fall.

The Library maintains two remote book returns in Iowa City – one on the east side at the First Avenue HyVee Pharmacy Drive-through and one on the west side at the Mormon Trek University of Iowa Community Credit Union Drive-through (far right lane).  These book returns are in addition to the outside book return located along Linn Street near the staff entrance to the Library.

Items returned at the remote book returns must be in the box by 1:00 PM each day or the item is considered returned the next day. Book returns are emptied 365 days a year and items picked up on holidays are checked in the next day the Library is open. Some materials, such as audiovisual equipment and oversize items that do not fit into the book returns, must be returned to the Help Desk during regular Library hours.

If you have questions about returning Library materials, please give us a call or stop by the Help Desk on the Library’s first floor.
